Toddler Activity of the Week: Contradictions

We spent hours last week doing two very different things!

1. Going to a movie.  It was the girls first.  And honestly… they are not ready for PG movies.  Aeralind and Bronwyn both were very scared over a couple of different scenes in Happy Feet 2.  But they sat still and very much in awe of the big screen. 🙂

2. Chapter Books.  I told you they were complete opposites!  We were just loving on some Winnie the Pooh.  We spent a good half hour or so reading before nap and sometimes bed each day.  They love it.  The illustrations are key, but it helps that they already love the character. Some classics never die.

8 Months

Sedryn boy, you think you are hysterical.  You’ve spent most of the month rolling/scooting around on the floor laughing at yourself.  It cracks me up!  And you love making me laugh and smile.  I think you may be the first true extrovert in this family.  So now we’re a family that does parties, corny jokes, and invites tons of people over because of you.  Okay… not yet… but I’m feeling it in the very near future!

You’re sick right now.  Fever, sneezy, coughing, tooth-almost popped through miserable sick.  It’s so very sad.  So I’m postponing your rocking chair picture for a day or two until your fever breaks and then I’ll add it here.  Oh, but I’ve been enjoying my snuggles from my busy little boy.  Such a sweet little treasure those snuggles are!

You are most definitely mobile now.  There’s no denying it any longer.  You’ve mastered an army crawl scoot, but for the last week I’m always catching you up on all four rocking and giving it all a try.  You love moving.  And chewing.  And grabbing things from your sisters.  And anything that makes noise.  The tiny piano and the girls Little People Zoo are your favorites.

Speaking of sisters, you enjoy trying to play with them.  Or at least just being near them.  Yesterday they were pig piling you on the bed and you were just eating up all that physical affection.  Well, until you had enough.  They were putting 60+ lbs of  wiggly toddler on top of you.  I’m still surprised you smiled and enjoyed it at all! (you were on the bed… good shock absorber.  But when you’re older feel free to blame all mental deficiencies on me allowing this to occur.)

Oh, but what I love most about you is that winning grin.  Whenever you see me after nap or as I walk into the room, you just grin.  You’ve even started scooting over to me.  It just melts me.  All the time.  Boy, are you going to be trouble when you get a bit older!

Natural Consequences

Bronwyn asks to have her Puddle Jumper taken off.  She’s been in the water awhile and is shivery.  I agree.

I cup her little face in my hands.  “Bronwyn, do not get in the water without this.  Come ask momma for crab back if you want to swim again.”

She nods happily.

Seconds later I spot her little body under water right off the last step she can touch.  I splash my way to her. Lift her up.
She snuggles right in, crying.
“Momma, I disobeyed!”
For a moment, a natural consequence softens her heart and immerses her in grace.  And she’s changed.
Gifts of Grace from God last week (3368-3377)

  • How Derek was able to come let us back inside
  • A little nook big enough to keep us out of the rain while we waited
  • Being able to serve another Mom
  • Sedryn sleeping long after I had cried on Mandy about being lost and him falling asleep in the car
  • Date night after a hard day

holy experience

Home-Life Project 52: Week 24

Toddler Activity of the Week: Montessori Flower Arranging

Generally, I like Montessori-based toddler activities.  With a degree in Outdoor Leadership (previously called Outdoor Experiential Education), I have an intense love for learning through doing.  Montessori combines the best experiential learning with an element I love called practical life.

Most practical life activities are just that: washing dishes, sweeping, pouring water from a teapot, and washing hands are some examples that we’ve done and loved.

But there was one practical life activity that always had me raise my eyebrows:
Flower Arranging.

But then the girls made vases for Mother’s Day at the Children’s museum and daddy taught them how to pick flowers for me.  Next thing I know, the girls are loving a flower arranging afternoon in the back yard.

Maybe it’s not such a crazy activity after all.

And yes… that is my dandelion garden in the backyard.  I think it’s naturally beautiful… or at least very natural :-p
